Adapting Eco-Schools for Early Years — by Foundation for Environmental Education
My interest in designing resources for Education for Sustainable Development sparked during my Masters Thesis research that I wrote on the topic Play-based Learning and then went on to design Growing Minds. Working on the handbooks helped me further my research and put my Graphic Design skills to use.
ROLE: Research and Design Consultant at Foundation for Environmental Education
During my time at the Foundation for Environmental Education, I worked on various handbooks for Eco-Schools. Part of which was the Early Childhood Education Handbook, which was aimed at the age group of 0 to 6 years. The idea behind the design was to be playful and colourful while keeping it nature centric. The visual language used was that with a watercolour effect, be it for the illustrations or the graphic elements. This added the playful and carefree factor to the book keeping in mind the target audience.
The seven steps as part of the Eco-Schools framework were adapted for Early Childhood Education along with themes that were defined specifically for this age group and were altered as per their development and understanding. The themes focused on were water, waste, energy, biodiversity & nature, health and climate & weather.
